Detail Inspiration: Print Inserts
This is a simple idea I’ve been wanting to try for a while: an insert or yoke of print on a solid dress, exemplified beautifully by this Suzy Perette dress from Custard Heart Vintage.
What a perfect way to use small bits of yardage!

This is beautiful! I recently got a retro apron very cheaply that has a pen and ink style illustration of a street scene on it, I was thinking about using it as a panel or insert on a plain dress, I’ll definitely be giveing it a try now!

I love that gorgeous yoke. I’ve been thinking of trying it on a top, though I have not sat to draft a pattern piece. I think either Sorbetto or Laurel would accommodate the detail very nicely :-)

This is lovely! Need to try it. It should be called ‘PRINTSERTING”.

Another great (non-vintage) example was recently posted by Scruffy Badger here!

Great idea for small remnants. I have a few pieces that are too small for a garment but too large to throw out. Will keep this in mind!

This is very pretty. I always fall in love with prints, but they look too busy on me. Maybe this would be a good way to add a little bit of print.
I have a question that’s related to detail inspiration: I just got your Sewing Handbook, and there’s a really pretty pink vintage dress pictured several times. It has some kind of trim around the neck (cording or embroidery?), but there aren’t any close-up pictures. Have you featured it in a blog post?

No, I haven’t. I think the dress you are referring to is a pink linen dress with some heavy lace trim on it.

Oh, heavy lace, I didn’t think of that. I was thinking of putting something similar on a Pastille dress.
Thank you very much for replying!

It is beautiful. And well done. I think about using this technique A LOT. It’s almost become an involuntary obsession and I’m not sure why. I think it has to do with buying a lot of end pieces, and generally being a thrifty person who can’t stomach throwing much away. But sometimes I really strike out with the combination, or I try too hard, and never start the project because it becomes so challenging and complicated in my head. It ‘s one of those situations where there are so many possibilities I lose focus and can’t make it to square one…any ideas? Maybe make up some rules, like project size, first?

This is beautiful!! Also a wonderful way to incorporate patterns that may be too busy for an entire garment. I think this would be a great tutorial idea, too! I have no idea how I’d approach this, but can imagine the skill would be quite transferrable to many designs and garments once mastered.

Great idea, perfect use of remnants. I have a lovely sewing book from the 1960s that talks about decorative elements like this and how to calculate the most pleasing ratios for a design like this…I must give it a try one day.

How clever to use use up your remnants! I hate waste too. Do you ever use organic fabrics? I love the feel and tend to buy online like http://www.organiccottonplus.com but I’d love to hear your sources

I love this idea for using remnants. I think I will practice with decorative pillows or other small items before I go full scale with a circle skirt! Thanks for the inspiration!

There was nothing commercial in building or commercial in painting done from Omaha in that is there? That is awesome.
