Detail Inspiration: How to Use Scallops

Scallops are such a fun detail to add to your garment. Just look at these different ways it can be done: hem, neckline, sleeves or even layers of scallops! We’re using these as inspiration for an upcoming scallop hem tutorial.

It’s so easy to find inspiring images but not do anything with them. Does that happen to you? There are many amazing resources that becoming overwhelmed by them is the norm. Do you have ways to filter through all the creativity so that it helps you create instead of bogging you down?

Each of these images shows an interesting way that scallops can be used. The bottom images are from a modern designer (Chloe) who has taken this vintage detail and paired it with an updated silhouette.

By taking these images, can you imagine ways to incorporate scallops into your creations? I find it helpful to ask myself questions about inspiring images such as “how can I use this?” and “what is it I love about this?” It helps me find new ways to make those inspirational photos meaningful and an impetus to creativity instead of impediment.

For some time, I’ve wanted to make a petticoat with a scalloped and embroidered hem – much like the first pattern! I was also inspired by an image. I’m waiting for the right fabric…
I think it helps if you filter out “one-use” ideas and try to focus on the reusable things instead. Thus, this petticoat is something I could wear with various garments. I guess I’m more likely to really make it if it’s something I know I will use.

I’ve been stuck in a boring rut as regards colours and styles.
I was confined to what the local chain stores have to offer.
No more!
Now I’m trying new fabrics and shapes, and while it’s still hit and miss, it’s fun!
Seeing what others have done with the Colette range on your Flickr group is most inspiring as I’m particularly drawn to the flattering feminity of retro styles.

Hello! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could get a
captcha plugin for my comment form? I’m using the same blog platform
as yours and I’m having trouble finding one? Thanks a lot!
