Her post about the pattern: First Few Days of May

What kind of fabric did you use? A quilting cotton in red with white polka dots from the Holland Fabric Market, and a softer white cotton for the tie and facings.

How did you decide to reflect your personal style in the pattern? I made the dress in early spring, feeling very weary of winter, so I wanted it to be fun and bright, a spot of color to chase away the winter gloom. Red is one of my favorite colors, and I also have a thing for polka dots, so this fits the bill perfectly.

What thoughts do you have about the project? It’s my Happy Dress: wearing it makes me happy every time! Aside from the fabric, I really love the sweetheart neckline, the little kimono cap sleeves and the bow, which make for such a pretty dress. Also: pockets! In fact I love it so much, I made a second one in navy-and-white gingham with a red bow during exam week, to keep me from going crazy with all the revision.

Thanks, Alessa!

I love your dress and the fact that it’s something that makes you happy when you wear it. I’ve been focusing on making dresses for myself, fiddling with fit and hoping to end up with a couple of dresses in my closet that make me truly happy.

Sarai & Caitlin, thanks so much for featuring me and one of my favorite dresses! The Coletterie may be my very favorite blog – you’re so inspirational! – so it feels very special to be chosen for a feature. Thank you!
