Greta Tie Scarf

This scarf is an easy way to use up fabric in your stash. With a nod to menswear, this scarf has a bit of an ascot look but with a fun pleat to lighten it up. No pattern is needed, you simply cut a couple of rectangles and sew!

Items Needed:

  • for scarf: 9 1/4” x 29 1/4” piece of fabric
  • for pleat: 4” x 8 3/4” piece of fabric
  • thread
  • needle

Sew a strip for the contrast pleat.

1. Cut the fabric for the pleat, at the dimensions listed above. Fold pleat in half, right sides together. Sew sides and trim seam allowance. Flip to right side and iron flat.

Mark the pleat placement.

2. Mark 1/2” intervals in the seam allowance.

Fold the pleats and baste.

3. Match up the markings and pin in place. Baste 1/4” from the edge.

4. Iron pleats to lie flat.

Attach pleat to the end of the scarf.

5. Pin pleat to the right side end of the scarf fabric. Leave a space of 5/8″ from the side for your seam allowance.

6. Fold scarf fabric over, right sides facing. Sew along the length and the end with the pleat. Leave the opposite end open.

7. Trim seam allowance and open to the right side. Turn in 5/8” at the open end of the scarf and press.

Fold the end of the scarf to create a channel.

8. Fold the open end of the scarf over 2”, pinning to the fabric, then hand stitch to the inside of the scarf using a catchstitch. Take care not to sew through the right side of the fabric.

Voila! A lovely new scarf for you, or perhaps a friend. Who knew you could make such a nice little scarf from leftover fabric scraps?

Thanks, Julia! We used two different silk fabrics to make this scarf.

This is so sweet! And a great Christmas gift idea that uses up bits and pieces, too. Thanks.

So pretty–love the little pleat detail! I’m loving the whole scarf trend, and I’ll have to make one of these to add to my growing collection.

I want to make my own scarf too but I’m afraid I’m just going to make a mess of it. :(

I think this is a perfect way to upcycle some actual men’s ties when the fabric is right. I have a bin full of them I’ve rescued from certain doom. I can’t wait to dig through them with this in mind!
Thanks so much!

Sorry, I don’t sew much and I don’t think I understand this step:

Fold scarf fabric over, right sides facing. Sew along the length and the end with the pleat. Leave the opposite end open.

Would this be correct: Fold the scarf in half, lengthwise, with right sides together, so it covers the pleat. Starting at the other end, sew the long open sides together, turn and sew the short sides together, over the basted stitch of the pleat.
