Pattern of the Month: Violet
We’re starting a new feature on the blog this year: Pattern of the Month
Each month, we’ll choose one pattern from our catalog to focus on, offering tutorials, tips, and free downloads to go along with it. Plus, each pattern will be discounted for the month it’s featured.
I figured it would be a fun way to tie our tutorials to a real project. So often, I feel like we create tutorials based on what we’re working on at the moment. But if no one else is working on the same type of technique or project, they have a tendency to disappear into the pinterest void without being used.
This way, there’s a little bit more togetherness, don’t you think? It’s not nearly as in depth as a sewalong, but I think it will be lots of fun.
We’re starting with Violet this month, our lovely little peter pan collar blouse. Devon and I have prepared some fun little details you can add and changes you can make if you decide to sew this one up.
How it works:

- This month, we’ll be posting tutorials and ideas you can use with Violet (or with other patterns if you want)
- Want to create your own tutorial using Violet? Add a comment to this post with a link at any time during the month and we’ll link it up at the end of the month.
- Upload your creations to our Flickr group, or tag them on Instagram with #VIOLETMONTH (you can also mention @colettepatterns if you want.)
- We’ll do a little roundup of some of your creations at the end of the month.

I love this idea! You all produce such helpful tutorials – I can’t wait to see what you share. I have the Violet pattern but I haven’t cracked into yet, so now seems like a pretty good time. How exciting!

Excellent idea! I really enjoyed Devon’s sewalong on the Moneta. I bought the Oolong a few years ago and haven’t used it yet. Love the bias cut, the smooth fit, but would like to have guidance and ideas for modifications (ie getting rid of ruching and gathering at sleeve to make it look a little more contemporary).

That would be fun. You could convert the ruching to darts and move them around, which could really give it a different look.

Oh what a fantastic idea! I haven’t made a Violet yet either although I do have the pattern. I’d like to see some sleeve variations and maybe a peplum added to it?

Great for me, too. I’m another who has the pattern but hasn’t started it yet. I always need to do a sba for Collette patterns; could you include a revisit of your technique for that? And another trouble spot for me is making the collar look crisp.

I like the idea of pattern month. I don’t have this pattern as yet, because I would like to see collar or neckline variations. I like the blouse itself, but I do not like peter pan collars at all.
If you do a feature on Laurel, then I’d like to see tutorials to address fitting issues.

I agree with Leaf. I’d like to make the blouse but would like to see other neckline/collar variations, at 57 I feel Peter Pan Collars are a bit young for me (others may likely disagree) :)

It’s actually so easy to alter! Because the collar is one piece, you can make it narrower, change the shape to be pointed, anything! It would be fun to draft some alternatives though, I agree. :)

I’m sure Sarai will answer but I can tell you that some of the parts of this are more complicated, the instructions are amazing!!!! It was the first garment I ever sewed that seemed like a beginning garment! The Size 18 is a very roomy XL, in my opinion.

Violet was my first Colette pattern and I love her. I feel as though I’m a bit too old for the Peter Pan collar so I’d love to see some variations on it. I always wanted to give it a pointed collar but chickened out!

I always have to reply to my comment because I post too early! I meant to add that in addition to giving it the pointed collar, I’ve wanted to lower the neckline too. I think that would look cool but it would involve redrafting the whole facing shebang. I look forward to seeing what you guys end up doing!

Do you have stores that you suggest? I’m looking to get some nice fabric but the fabric stores near me are JoAnn’s and I’m not good a finding the correct type of fabric.
