Featured Seamstress: Joanne

Name: Joanne

Skill Level: Beginner

Pattern Used: Peony

Her Website: Stitch and Witter

Her Post about the Pattern: Completed Project: Colette Peony

What kind of fabric did you use? I used a crisp cotton bed sheet from the 60s/70s which I bought for £4 in a vintage sale.

How did you decide to reflect your personal style in the pattern? I wanted to create a sort of swinging sixties feel so the fabric was important and I left out the belt in favour of a skinnier style (also self stitched) which suited my short torso better. Oh, and I added piping round the waist as well which you can just about see in the picture.

What thoughts do you have about the project? I think the Peony is wonderful for stitchers of all levels as it’s easy to put together but endlessly adaptable – it’s a blank canvas for creating your own signature dress. I’d love to make it again in another fabric with more drape for a glamorous evening feel, and maybe even add some details like a peter pan collar or a scalloped hem as I improve my skills. I’d recommend making a muslin first to get the bodice just right for your shape, and then just make it again…and again… and again…

Such a cute Peony! This longer sleeved version of the pattern worked really well with your 60s fabric/vibe. Love the little bow belt too!

Thanks for the inspiration! I’ve been meaning to try this pattern. :)
