Weekend reading: girl groups, a new sewing book, and saying no
This post almost didn’t happen today.
After coming back from our trip to Panama, I’ve been catching up on work all week and putting long hours into the free hemming ebook (which is clocking in at over 100 pages, be sure to sign up so I can send it to you because it is looking AMAZING). AND we have a photo shoot today.
So in all that fuss, I completely forgot to write today’s weekend reading post.
But I had some really great links to share, so I’m up at 6am to put it together.
Ok, I know that sounds like wah, I work too hard, but actually it’s led me to the opposite realization. I could easily have skipped it, but I really like writing them. It’s fun. And that’s made me realize how very lucky I am.
Enjoy the links!
Weekend Reading:
- My trip to panama was short but pretty incredible. You can check out a few photos on instagram, but I’m excited to share some of the dresses I made for the trip (including another free pattern hack) next month (after Sept-HEM-ber is over).
-
“As a father of daughters.” Oh man, this made me laugh.
-
My friend Susan collaborated with Pendleton on a sewing book using their fabrics. It’s called Hand-stitched Home. Here’s a peek at the project I contributed to the book, something I use every day.
-
How you know it was worth it (and why that means more than achieving goals). Alexandra is so smart.
-
What do you really want? Do objects substitute for the things you actually want more of? This is a little painful for me to think about.
-
“It’s easy to say no if you love something.” Well, I don’t know about easy.
-
The girl group I never had. This post is so sweet and honest and so familiar to me.
-
Taking breaks boosts your productivity. (I know, duh, but a good reminder).
For more links every week, you can follow me on Twitter, where I’m always posting interesting tidbits I find.

I always like these weekend reading posts, Sarai. All the links usually lead me to interesting (often thought provoking) articles. Thanks for waking up at 6 am to put this together :) Cheers!

Oh taking breaks. I know I need them, but I rarely take them! I learned in my psychology class in college that our brains can only handle 50 minutes of full concentration, at which time we need a break that is at least 10 mins. Try as I might, I still haven’t mastered it.

I’m glad you posted. I always look forward to these posts. Just a request. Would it be possible to make the links open in a new window? I usually want to read all or most of them, but I’d love it if I could open them up in a new window to wait for me while I finish reading the rest of your post.

you don’t say what browser you’re using, but i just two finger click on the link and safari gives me the option to open the link in another tab, or another window. i don’t think sarai needs to do anything for you to make that happen. :)

As Gabriel mentioned, almost any browser has an option for you to open in a new window or tab, so I like to leave the decision up to the reader rather than force them to open a new window. :)

Always enjoy the weekend reading posts, and your pictures of Panamá are making me miss it so much! I was there a few summers ago for a month. So many wonderful people and experiences.

I am really looking forward to your Hemming Resource Guide – what an incredible amount of work you must be putting into it, but what an invaluable tool it will be – all in one place! I look forward to your blog posts in my inbox and the inspiration they provide!

I do get more done if I remember to stop working once an hour. Now I set an alarm for a dance break. Hey, it’s Madison time!

I appreciate the ‘girl’s group’ article. We are in such a mobile society that can be hard to create a circle of friends. It’s interesting to see how the growth of the internet is changing the social landscape as well.

This blog is a major source of inspiration for me and has been since I stumbled across it a few years ago. It helped me take the plunge of learning to sew and it inspires me now to keep going, keep learning, and it keeps me (very!) excited about this creative outlet in my life. So your 6am posting… was worth it. I hope you know that!

I cannot believe you were in Panama! that’s where I am :)
From your pictures I see you stayed at the American Trade Hotel … the place was rebuilt recently, they did a magnificent job.
