Happy Corduroy Appreciation Day!

Friends, it is with great anticipation that I welcome this momentous day.

You see, every November, the members of the Corduroy Appreciation Club celebrate their love for this superior fabric on 11|11, the day that most resembles corduroy.

But this year, we celebrate the day that most resembles corduroy EVER, 11|11|11. It is a day for corduroy lovers to come together and share their love for this remarkable fabric. I don’t think I can put it better than Jesse of Put This On, in his address to last year’s Grand Meeting:

“Friends, we are gathered today for a noble purpose. We celebrate not just a fabric, but a way of life.

For a thousand years, corduroy has stood for what is right in our lives. Intellectual rigor. Fresh air. The comfort of a crackling fire. It is a fabric as forgiving and enduring as our spirits at their best.”

I feel lucky to live in a place with an ideal climate and sensibility for the wearing of corduroy. Here, corduroy, sweaters, and boots reign supreme 9 months out of the year. But 11|11 gives us a chance to truly appreciate this soft, sturdy, remarkable fabric. Corduroy celebrations are taking place all over the US, including here in Portland.

To celebrate, I am wearing my Parfait dress, made in deep blue corduroy with silver buttons. And what goes better with corduroy than crisp cool air and a glowing pile of fallen leaves? Nothing, that’s what.

Hail the wale!

That is awesome! I’m wearing corduroy trousers right now, though unintentional. I love your hat!

Thanks! The hat is from a store here in Portland called Bonnet. They have some lovely hats.

That’s hilarious. I always thought that the name for corduroy comes from the French for “fabric of the kings” but Wikipedia tells me that’s not its true etymology. Oh well! Your outfit is absolutely adorable, though, I hadn’t thought of wearing Parfait as a jumper but I think I like it better with a blouse underneath than as a standalone summer dress.

I like it this way too. I think it would look really cute with a tie-collar blouse underneath (like jasmine) too.

Wow! What a great idea! Now I am inspired to make a Parfait in corduroy! Even a Rooibos would look cute now that I think about it!

Aw man, this upsets me because just yesterday I completely botched a red corduroy skirt I was working on. I was looking forward to being cozy and cute in it this autumn, but it’s way too tight. I may have to start anew.

Aww, I’m sorry to hear that.

Thanks for letting us know! I actually did a post on corduroy today without even knowing it was this special day. It must be the corduroy gods leading me in the right direction! :-)

Love your Parfait outfit!

This is adorable (and a wee bit hilarious) all at the same time! I love the idea of a corduroy day. It’s a fabric I don’t incorporate into my wardrobe nearly enough. You’re inspiring me to rectify that with your fantastic Parfait!

Yay! I have a stash just waiting for me. And it is my 5 year anniversary today!

oh no! i should have worn my corduroy rooibos… and instead, i’m tromping around in my denim ginger (what can i say? it’s casual friday.). of course i’d be the one who is dressed incorrectly for the occasion.

i actually have a giant piece of navy corduroy that i wanted to make into a parfait – it makes me happy to see yours and to know that it looks good!

also: those leaves. holy hell, those leaves are beautiful!

I just finished a pair of Coudoroy Clovers during the Sew Along. I am absolutely in love with how soft they are! I love the blue coudoroy parfait. I am newer to sewing and a coudoroy dress isn’t something I had thought of but now it is definitely on my to do list!

Adorable outfit! I’m a big corduroy fan.

(Although, I must admit I’m a bit put off by the choice of day (though I know you did not choose it). Cute visual reference aside, it seems a bit disrespectful to the veterans?)

Oh my gosh, I’m working on a corduroy skirt right now! Lovely purple corduroy! It’s the first time I’ve sewn with it but so far so good. I’m using your tip from the book about pressing, thank you!

Well, I’ll be! I’m wearing corduroy pants today and didn’t even realize there was such a thing as an appreciation day, hooray! Bit windy in NYC today so I thought it was a perfect match. I really do need more cords in my life. Your dress/outfit is so cute!

Your patterns are so cute! I am currently helping a sewing student do a (very) full bust adjustment on your Crepe dress. Really complicated! But she is determined to fit this pattern to her body! Hopefully we’ll take a photo when we get the dress made (or just even the muslin).

I love corduroy, and not just because I use it a lot for my kids’ clothes! Right now I’m dying to make a Beignet in the Michael Miller Birds of Norway corduroy, as it is the perfect fall print, but I can’t seem to find it anywhere in the US. Still searching on etsy and ebay. Anyone know where I can find some?

Sarai, I have never heard of corduroy appreciation day but I, too, love corduroy! It’s just that most of the year it’s too warm to wear it down here. However, I do have 4 pairs of corduroy pants that I have already taken out of storage and worn this year. And when I go back east in a couple weeks, that’s all the pants I’m taking, with the exception of 1 pair of jeans!
