Patterned Bias Tape

red patterned bias tape

Bias binding is neat stuff. You can use it to finish sleeves and necklines, make easy waistbands, use it instead of a narrow facing, or in place of a hem. It can add a real dash of color and/or pattern to solid colored garments. If you want a really beautiful finish for the inside of your garment, you can even use it to bind your seams like Tricia of bits and bobbins has on the beautiful denim skirt pictured below. I’ve done this on skirts and dresses, and I can’t tell you how much fancier it feels to wear something with high-fashion finishing like this.

So where do you get such adorable bias binding? You can make it! It’s quite easy, it just takes some time and patience. Later this week, I’ll be posting a tutorial for my method of making bias binding, so stay tuned!

And if you don’t want to spend that sort of energy right now? I’ve come across some lovely handmade bias tape for sale from Polly Danger on Etsy. Isn’t it sweet? I can picture about a million uses for this stuff.

I was just thinking about buying some pretty, patterned fabric to make bias binding with. ;) I can’t wait to read about your method for making it!

I’m a beginner garment sewer. Would you wash the bias tape before using? If not, do the bias tapes you buy and use never run?
