Win a copy of Sewing in a Straight Line by Brett Bara

I met Brett Bara at Quilt Market in October, author of the book Sewing in a Straight Line. I knew right away that we were on the same page when it comes to sewing and craftiness, but it wasn’t until I looked at her blog and saw her posts on cats and smoothies that I knew for sure she was a woman after my own heart.

Brett sent me a copy of her lovely book, and I thought I’d share it with you all.

As a person that sews, you probably hear friends and family say they’d like to learn to sew, but don’t know where to start. Sometimes encouraging friends to get started presents a bit of a challenge. You know that you should recommend some straightforward, easy projects for them to get started and boost their confidence, but most easy projects are a bit boring. It’s hard to get excited about them.

That’s where this book comes in. With lovely, clean, modern photography and pretty styling, the simple home and garment projects in Sewing in a Straight Line actually look like things you’d want to make! What a breath of fresh air, and a great way to ease a beginner into the world of sewing. Or for the more experienced sewist to get some instant gratification.

Would you like to win a copy of this book? Simply leave a comment and let me know what your favorite easy, simple, of quick gratification project is. I’ll choose a winner at random on Wednesday, Jan 26th.

I’ll start! My favorite simple project is making napkins and tea towels. They’re so fast, cute, and useful both every day and when you’re entertaining. What about you?

Update: Congrats to JP, who won (via random number generator) with her comment:

“Baby blankets! Just a big square of flannel: finish the edges and you’re good to go!”

I like to make children’s skirts or pants. Their small size makes them quick!

A few friends and I make what we call the “rock star skirt”. It’s a-line, has an elastic waist, and loosely based on your hip measurement. Really, it’s just 2 squares serged together at the sides, top and bottom serged to finish, and then the elastic casing and hem folded over once and stitched. If you’re lucky that day, you can bust out like 2 in an hour!

Patchwork scarves. It uses up fabric scraps, and backed with flannel they’re incredibly snuggly. Plus, you can remember all the individual projects that made up the scraps. They’re great gifts – unusual and very usable.

How lovely book! For me easy projects means that I can have fun finishing them very quickly in my spare time. I love to sew for my nieces: dresses, bags or costumes. Children’s clothes are smaller and easier to fit well. If something goes wrong it’s not big deal and I can easily correct it or start everything again with small piece of fabric!

I love making dresses. Dresses are always my splurge items, so I love whipping something up myself instead of hitting the stores ;)

Looks like a great book. My easy, instant gratification project would be a skirt. I love to whip up a cute skirt in an hour or less and be wearing that same day. Thanks for the giveaway.

A shirred beach dress for my sister. Two hours is about as quickly as I make anything, and she’s got a piece of clothing that’s guaranteed to fit and doesn’t need to be perfect because it’s a flattering bathing suit coverup.

Hello!
I love the breezy blouse – it would be al lovely little project for my little eastervacation… Together with my new bikini and yellow shorts I can just smell the sunlight… ok…I´ll stop dreaming…

Skirts out of thrifted pillowcases! You have to put a little work into finding a nice print or an unstained piece but it’s worth it. And people are always amazed that the vintage-y piece was made in two hours the day before!

Would it be too sycophantic of me to say that I like the Sorbetto blouse as a simple make? Yes? Okay, then, I’d say that I recently made an ipad case as a satisfying, simple make. Thanks for this giveaway! I’ve heard about this book and would love to study it further.

My favorite quick and easy project is a simple knit top or dress. Despite being super quick and easy, fun fabric can make it look much more impressive to others.

I would have to say a gathered skirt or a dress for my 1 year old niece Iris, with a gathered skirt. There is something about gathered skirts that are so feminine and sweet. They are fast and easy and when I see my niece in them it makes me melt.

I’m a beginner (just started in December!) so I’m always looking for easy projects but, really, how many pillowcases can you make? My favorite easy project so far was an apron that started its life as a kitchen towel. That book looked so good, I already bought it! But one of my girlfriends is starting back up in sewing and would love to give it to her as a gift! Thanks!

I am a complete beginner and could really use this book! I’ve been reading your website for the last few months getting acquainted with sewing and trying to make myself less afraid to start. As for “instant gratification” projects, I’m a knitter, so I’m going to cheat and say that I ‘d make a scarf, even though those take hours too!

I am a true beginner, less than 9 months sewing, so my only “quick” projects so far have been curtains (I’ve made curtains for each room and I love the customization options– they are the only decor in my home that truly looks planned and purposeful).
I was able to make a tunic in two days recently, so that’s not too bad, about to try my hand at a quick shirt

I’d love to win a copy of the book and start making some of the projects!
Currently, my instant gratification project is a rag quilt from my stash of fabric for a ‘new mother’ friend of mine. It is easy to cut (I’m cutting 8″ squares) , it has no complicated piecing , and no binding ( happy day !) .
I’m doing that project while waiting for the Colette Sewing Book book to arrive by mail (hurry up UPS! ) so I can join the sew along group in making the Meringue skirt.
Another instant gratification project I often ‘go to’ are fleece projects ( hats, bathrobes) made on my serger. SO fast and simple.

My favorite quick and easy and totally rewarding thing to make is a bias cut skirt with fold over elastic waistband. Needless to say, I have a lot of skirts and I wear them pretty much all the time in the summer. :)

Cushion covers. I’ve made them out of tea towels, fabric remnants, scarves and old clothing. It’s so much fun to see what you can do with a basic square base, and I like having lots of pillows to cuddle up against on the couch. They’re all in shades of pink in my flat…

Cute book! I have soo many friends who want to learn how to sew and I’m always encouraging them with links to blog posts & online tutorials for easy projects… this would be a great thing to keep in my sewing room & use for little one-on-one learn to sew lessons :)

My favorite easy projects are simple reconstructions from thrifted clothing – turning a muumuu into a wiggle dress, shaping in a large top to fit my body, turning a sweater into a cardigan, etc. Very instant gratification – not to mention cheap!

I’ve begun making neck gators – just double sided tubes that you can pull up over your nose if the cold & wind get too bad. They are fast, easy to customize for individual size, and I can make them in lots of different color combinations, as opposed to the all-black ones I see in the stores. I’m currently looking for pretty knits (double knits, anyone?) to use as one side to reduce the bulk a little. But as cold as it’s been, the bulk is fine. I’m having fun with these until I start something else.

I wish I had a quick project that I just pick up and do, as evidenced by the pile of “quick” projects I have been meaning to make since last Spring: round tablecloth (how to make a hem for that?), placemats, aprons , tea cozy (we drink lots of tea). I’ve been collecting the tools, the fabric, the thread, but I really need to get started! To be fair, I did make a dress this Spring… your wonderful Colette dress! I know I can manage to make things when there is some guidance…

Another thing I like to make that is quick is gift bags for wine bottles. So much nicer to hand the hostess a pretty bag cloth bag w/ the wine in it than just a plain old bottle. I can make these simple with just a ribbon around the neck, or if I was feeling especially ambitious, I could quilt or applique it. It’s usually a last minute-before-I-leave-the house project, however.
